Father Junipero Serra (November 24, 1713 - August 28, 1784) was a priest, explorer, agriculturist, stockman, engineer, architect, teacher and lawmaker. His being an explorer had led him to Baja and Alta California in the 1770s where he founded missions to promote Catholicism.
Before his death, Fr. Serra confirmed the baptism of 5,309 Americans, mostly California Indian neophytes converted during the 14 years of his mission. At the age of 79, on August 28, 1784, Fr. Serra died of tuberculosis. He was buried at the Carmel Mission Basilica Museum, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States
Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988 in Vatican City, and was canonized on September 23, 2015 by Pope Francis.
